15/05 Goldcross Cycles sold to Super Cheap Auto

by bmxultra.com
Super Cheap Auto have bought all 11 Melbourne based Goldcross Cycles stores for a reported $15M. The new owners consider Melbourne's market saturated, a relief for independant bike shop owners in the Melbourne area I am sure. The new owners look to grow the company and push the stores right throughout Australia and into New Zealand. This can only mean greater sales for brands like SE.

14/05 Plastic waste reduction

by Shane Jenkins
I don't consider myself a tree hugging greeny and you wouldn't see me in front of a bulldozer chained to a tree, however I do respect the environment. I recycle, I put rubbish in the bin, and I do enjoy riding or walking through forests and national parks.

I start to wonder if I am one of the only BMXers that is concerned about the environment. Each year at the World BMX Championships, Australian BMX Championships and even at the 2007 Victorian Championships each competitor is given an event specific number plate that they must use for that event. That's thousands of one off use plastic number plates and plastic ties. Why? So they look good in photos? So the sponsors can feel warm and fuzzy about their tiny little logos appearing on the number plate? I could imagine that a world championships number plate would be held in high regard and put in a collection, especially considering the costs involved. But more local plates like national and state, well unless they were actually presentation plates would just get tossed aside after they are finished with.

The Australian government has an issue they are trying to tackle with plastic shopping bags, why aren't our BMX governing bodies also looking at ways to reduce plastic usage? Competitors already have their own plates why can't they use those?

I know what some of you are thinking, we do the same thing at the BSX charity event. Well it's not the same, we print only the number of plates that we need which is around 50. Riders hand those plates back when racing is over and we have them signed and auctioned off. From there they take pride in amongst people's BMX collections. Any unused plates are printed up with a thank you message and presented to sponsors. It's a system that works very well raising lots of money for the Royal Children's Hosplital, however it's a managable number, you can't do the same thing with thousands of plates.

What are the solutions? Allow riders to use their own plates in competition. Reusable plates? Recycle bins at the track? I'm not sure of the best solution, but I am sure that sponsors would like to see their money going to a good cause while not adding to waste problems.

13/05 Factory Tangent/Bawls Tulare race report!

Factory Tangent/Bawls press release
Spring is in full swing and the ABA has nationals all over the country for racers to showcase their skills.  This weekend’s stop was dead smack in the middle of California for the US Nationals in Tulare.  And we all know what that means, the California based Factory Tangent/BAWLS squad was there in full force!  Looking to add some more podium finishes to record books, the team came in all BAWLS-energized and ready to roll!

Factory Tanget/Bawls teamComing off a win in Oregon had the team psyched, but they knew they’d have to work even harder to repeat at a factory stacked California race.  The team showed they were ready for the challenge when Riley kept his class win streak from Oregon alive and topped the podium with the win in 16x once again.  Joining his teammate atop the podium Jacob pulled off a wire to wire victory in the always tough 11x class main event.  Those two wins set the tone for the team as Kevin Shankle (17-18x) and Nate Abbe (13x), rode their Intense race frames to the podium as well.  After the dust cleared and the points were tallied, the Factory Tangent team posted a strong second place only missing the win by two points!  Props to BFR for a great day of racing and the overall win.

After just missing on Saturday the team was ready for day two of competition on Sunday Morning.  Tangent’s factory girl Tyler Schaefer was the pace setter for the day with a win in 14 girls.  The boys strapped on their custom BAWLS /Fly helmets and did their best to follow suit.  Jacob couldn’t quite match his Saturday win with a late gate, but did rally back for the third in 11x.  The dynamic duo of Blake Paulson and Nate Abbe were looking great in the 13x main until a second place slide out by Nate left him in the bottom of turn two.  Teammate Blake picked up the slack and dodged a sliding Nate to cruise in for the second place spot.  Riley started off the main the same as the day before with a holeshot and the lead in 16x.  He looked like a lock for the win, but a charging Tory Nyhaug (Redline) chased Riley down and nipped him at the line breaking his three race win streak.  When all was said and done on the day of racing, Factory Tangent pulled in a fourth place in the factory competition.

All in all the team had a great time in Tulare and posted some good finishes in the race for the ABA Factory Title.  You know they’ll all be ready to go when the tour comes back West in July to Oak Creek BMX, the home track of Tangent and three of our team riders.  In the mean time, keep your eyes peeled for clinics by the factory Tangent/BAWLS team in your neck of the woods.  We’ll keep ya posted.

Tangent/Bawls would like to thank all of our sponsors: Tangent Products, BAWLS Guarana, Fly Racing, Intense BMX, Sinz, Thomson, Clifbar, and Riders Pro Shop.

12/05 Kenda signs multi-year partnershp with NBL

NBL press release
Hilliard, Ohio – The National Bicycle League (NBL) is proud to announce a new multi-year partnership with Kenda Tires and Tubes. Kenda will be recognized as the “Official Tire and Tube” of the NBL National Series and also as a key co-sponsor of the ‘Bring-A-Buddy’ National Recruiting program.

To differentiate themselves in the competitive market for quality tires with innovative treads, Kenda will be promoted through a mix of national event exposure and traditional media including color advertising in BMX Today Magazine.  To connect Kenda directly to thousands of potential customers, NBL will promote the brand through on-site games like the ‘Kenda Tire-Toss’, at select National events.  “We truly believe in the value of ‘Experiential’ marketing and how it affects consumers in a more positive and organic way” said Kevin O’Brien, NBL Marketing Director, “Kenda is genuinely interested in promoting the sport and this adds great value to our program” O’Brien adds.

Several of Kenda’s tires are already popular with NBL members and teams including the Team NBL Champs of 2007 – VBS/Kenda from Ohio. To stay competitive, Kenda is currently developing several new lower-profile treads and a Kevlar folding bead tire to compliment their already-impressive line of rubber.  Favorites, such as the Small Block Eight, Kompact and the K-Rad, continue to be the flagships of the Ohio-based brand as they forge new ground in treadnology.

“We’re looking forward to a successful venture with the NBL” said Jim Wannamaker, Kenda’s North American Marketing Director, “It’s a very exciting time for the sport and we trust the NBL to represent our brand to their members around the country” continued Wannamaker.

To kick off the sponsorship, NBL is promoting the ‘Guess the Tread’ Contest through the NBL website exclusively (www.nbl.org). Win one of five sets now!

Kenda’s partnership with the NBL comes at a perfect time as the sport nears its Olympic debut in August. NBL is working hard to attract new riders and bring back those who raced during the sport’s formative years through a number of exciting programs and cross-promotions. Visit www.nbl.org to learn more and watch for a Kenda Tire-Toss near you.

09/05 UCI SX at Copenhagen (DEN)

by bmxultra.com
Round three of the UCI Supercross World Cup circus kicks off today. For many riders a good result is vital for national ranking and Olympic selection as it's the final of the Supercross events prior to the Olympics, the world championships in China will be the final test under race conditions for the riders. There are a lot of riders with a lot to prove, I'd hate to have to pick a winner for this one. All I can say is if Adelaide, or any Supercross rounds for that matter, are anything to go by, anything can happen.

08/05 Upcoming product reviews

by bmxultra.com
One of our favourite things about this website is the opportunity to do product reviews on some of the best products on the market. With head product tester on the mend from an ankle injury and finally off his crutches we should be able to get back to regular weekly product reviews in the very near future. We already have two very big ones lined up and a whole lot more in the pipeline.

An Intense tyre shoot-out is high on the agenda. That's right we will have all three ITS tyres set up and putting them through their paces. We will be trying to figure out the ins and outs of the different designs and highlight the advantages of each tread pattern.

The other is the Tektro Donny Robinson Signature brakes with the carbon lever (also available with a magnesium lever) and titanium hardware. These little babys look sweet, but how will they cope under BMX conditions?
Tektro Donny Robinson Brake Kit

Keep an eye out for reviews on these products and a whole lot more.

We might even get a sneak preview of the Jackass presents Mat Hoffmans Tribute to Evel Knievel DVD, fingers cross.

08/05 NSW central regionals,ACT

by Adam Carey
On the 3rd and 4th of May the NSW central state series took place in ACT. The double header weekend was talked about as one of the best weekends in the series and took place at both the Melba & Tuggeranong BMX tracks. Each was a separate event. The whole weekend was a bundle of great atmosphere, weather and riders. It was set up to be a fantastic weekend and that’s just what it was.

It was fantastic to watch racing with big numbers supporting the series. The am’s were riding really well. In 9 boys the stand out was Justin “cheeky boy” Beatty with unbelievable horsepower and skill for his age. In 12 boys Ionn stood out winning the finals in smooth style. Kyle Hughes was riding with determination to show he is 1a for a reason, riding well all weekend and winning both days. “Nugget” Lowe was riding with great skill and with great speed all weekend, having 15 races a day and making A pro final’s he was very busy, but you couldn’t tell. 15 boys had Liam Gilganon and Corey Bucknal dominate a star studded field. 25-29 men’s Gavin Turner rode well all weekend. It was great to see a lot of female talent coming up. Look out for the likes of Taylor Sultana, Nicole Docherty, Danielle Beecroft and co in the near future.

The relays belonged to Liverpool as they rocked the show winning both relays and coming away very happy.  It was close at times but Liverpool ran away with the lead mockingly in the dying laps.

Pro had a challenging time for all classes. In pro women it was Caitlin Wilmot and Ash Craig fighting it out all weekend long. Caitlin won the epic battle. A pro on the fist day had Warren Kasey teaching some of the younger boys what proper tricks old school riders have competing very strongly. Ben Clark was his freakish self as always riding with precision and smooth skill, only being challenged by Henderson who shook things up on every occasion. Henderson and Clark would be the smoothest youngsters I have seen on a bike in a long time. In AA pro it was the Darrell and Cameron show. Thos two were out front nearly every time while the rest scrambled for positions. Hats should go off Frank Penrose for how well he rode over the weekend showing he is improving to become a force in AA pro.

It is Great to see a large number of sprockets getting involved and having posty Pat Lowe take them through warm ups with help from Crupi’s Leigh Darrell, myself (Bmxultra/ One bikes Adam Carey) and Top elite rider Alex Cameron. Also it was great to see the old blokes out on the track, tiring on the second day they decided to have a few pump races, very amusing to watch Greg Westman from Winning Edge Cycles and Matt Black work their bikes around the track.

Such a good weekend will leave many BMX’ers very happy for the next few weeks. See you guys around the tracks!!!!

05/05 TEAM REDLINE NATIONALS REPORT

Redline Australia press release
2008 Nationals was another big year for Team Redline Australia. The team has had a very strong representation on the podium over the last few years thanks to Ziggy and Josh Callan, Ash Pemberton, Michael Vocko, Todd Pascoe & Melinda McLeod. Most of these riders have now advanced to the senior ranks and are being assisted in their development into the sport’s elite level by their respective state Institute’s of Sport or National development squads.

Ziggy was unfortunately out injured for these Nationals after a fall at Penrith but will be back on the bike for the Worlds. Josh crashed in Supercross after making it through time trials into the main comp. and had to contend with a broken thumb for the rest of the week. In spite of this setback he finished with an overall 3rd placing in the Junior Men Probikx competition and a 4th placing for Junior Men Nationals. Ash Pembo and Michael Vocko reached semis in senior men’s Probikx, semis for Ash in Nationals and a tough quarter stopped Michaels run in senior men Nationals. Great effort by both riders who are newcomers to the senior elite ranks for 2008.  One of the senior ranks young guns, Todd Pascoe impressed in senior men Probikx with a finals berth 5th placing and reached semi’s in Nationals. Justin Braybon also had a run at the tough Junior Men’s class reaching Semi’s and finishing the Probikx competition in 7th place.

The team unfortunately lost Luke Pretlove to injury in the early stages of cruiser practice. Luke ended up in hospital for the remainder of the week and we all wish him well for a speedy recovery.
Our 2008 star rider, Melinda McLeod was in great form after some recent injury recuperation and took out 1st place in 15 girls Nationals and finished 1st place in the National Champbikx competition.  Another remarkable result from Melinda.

With a lot of our riders moving into the elite ranks there was a big focus on the development of the junior squad this year and they did not disappoint.

Our NSW representatives, Saya and Kai Sakakibura impressed yet again.  Saya finished in 1st place in 9 year girls in front of our other 9 girls rider and last year’s National 8 girls champion, Katie Van Zanden.  Saya’s big brother and last year’s National 11 boys champion Kai, was unlucky in the final of the 12 boys but ended up in 4th place after leading all his heats quarters and semi’s.

Our West Australian juniors had a very strong representation in the finals this year with Rachelle Smith placing 1st  in 13 girls 20 inch and 3rd  in cruiser. Special congratulations must go to Rachelle who has now been National champion for the third year in a row. Luke Tanner placed  4th in 13 year boys and Hannah Throns placed 4th in 13 year girls. Thanks must go to the Redline WA agent Jim Howe of Pal and Panther for his continued support which has allowed the Redline team to build a very strong base in the WA BMX community.

The Queenslanders did not let the team down, lead by the North Queenslanders Katie Van Zanden who finished with a 2nd in 20 inch and 1st place in cruiser and Mitchell Hoad, 3rd in 9 year boys. Tristyn Kronk placed 3rd in cruiser and was unlucky not to advance out of his semi in 12 boys 20 inch. These riders are all mentored by the North Queensland Redline agent, the remarkable Jeff Mills who is doing a great job in assisting our talented North Queensland contingent.

South Queensland was represented by Troy Elliot, Sarah & Lachlan Harvey and Adam & Liam Hilliam.  Troy put in great performance after missing out on finals at his first Nationals last year and made finals in both 10 boys 20inch and cruiser placing 6th and 7th respectively. Unfortunately 11 year old Lachlan was out injured after a crash in the early stages of the cruiser competition but big sister Sarah stepped up with 2nd in 13 year girls and 4th in cruiser. Adam Hilliam narrowly missed out advancing to semis in the tough 14 year boys class while Liam made it through for an 8th in cruiser.

Old guys rock !!.  What a performance from the teams elder statesmen. The Victorian wildman Damien Callen placed 2nd in 40-44 cruiser, the big man Kev Hilliam from Queensland placed 8th in 45+ 20 inch after a fall in the final and our WA rocket man Paul Throns went home with a 1st. in 45+ mens 20 inch. The star of the show however was West Australian Karl Mustchin who dominated the tough 35 -39 cruiser class for a win and placed 8th in 30+ masters 20 inch. Karl has recently been appointed coach for the National Junior Development Squad and will accompany the squad to China for the World’s.

To top all these remarkable results off, Redline once again finished in 1st place in the National Corporate Team Trophy competition and also won bike of the year, for the second year running  in the BMXpress Gold Cup awards. Many thanks to Warwick Wheeler who continues to be a great supporter of the sport of BMX.

Thanks must also go to Bill DeMaid and his hard working team at BMX International for their continued and generous support of the Redline team and the sport of BMX. Thanks also to all the officials of BMX Australia and the state associations who put on another first class National Championship event.
